Chancel Repair Liability Insurance
A surprisingly high number of people live in properties close to churches without ever realising that they may be liable for making a contribution towards the cost of repairing the chancel of the church.
This is due to an ancient law which many believed unenforceable. It was assumed that it flew in the face of the Human Rights Act; or that the church would not attempt to enforce the law owing to the potentially bad publicity that this would attract; or that the records necessary to demonstrate the existence of a liability could not be produced. A recent and highly publicised case suggests otherwise.
